Rapper and Brooklyn, NY native Shyne was supposed to be released from prison today (Oct. 6th) after serving more than eight years for his role in a 1999 night club shooting that “involved” his mentor Sean “Puff Daddy / P. Diddy / Diddy “ Combs and actress/singer Jennifer Lopez.
“Shyne”, aka Jamal Barrow, was charged in March 2001, with attempted murder, assault and reckless endangerment.
According to MTV, “The rapper admitted to firing a gun at Club New York, but maintained that he was acting in self-defense and that another gunman’s bullets injured the two victims. He faced up to 25 years in prison.” He was sentenced to only 10, which he began on June 1, 2001.
While serving his time, Shyne released two albums and has allegedly converted to Judiasm and has legally changed his name to Moses Michael Leviy.
But it looks like Shyne’s homecoming is on hold for the moment…
Reps for the rapper revealed to MTV News that the MC is being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at an unspecified facility in Western New York State. Officials are determining whether or not to deport the rapper, who was born in Belize.
“Shyne is currently in federal custody while his future immigration status is determined,” the rep said in a message to MTV. Shyne attorney Oscar Michelen emphasized to MTV News on Tuesday afternoon that Shyne has not been released, contrary to media reports.
